Fulbright College Presents 'Building the Scaffolding of DEI Grant Writing, Teaching, Service and Research'

Join us virtually on April 7 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. as three esteemed panelists discuss the foundation of integrating diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) into all faculty spaces, including your scholarship and grant writing. Each panelist brings a unique perspective with relevant experience and success to the conversation. 

Jacquelyn Wiersma-Mosley, professor of human development and family sciences in the Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences, will discuss "Integrating DEI in All Faculty Spaces: Research, Teaching and Service." Wiersma-Mosley's research program has primarily been dedicated to investigating violence against women, including risk factors for victimization among marginalized populations. Her teaching program has focused on creating curricula to increase cultural competence (via the Intercultural Development Inventory, IDI) in courses she developed.

Marcia Shobe, director of research for the IDEALS Institute and professor of social work in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, will discuss "Grant Writing and Community-Based Research: Capturing Diversity, Equity & Inclusion." Shobe's research focuses on health disparities, food security for underserved populations and community development related to anti-poverty initiatives. She is a team member on the UA ADVANCE ENGAGE gender equity grant to increase faculty diversity in STEM and a principal investigator on several community development DEI grants to train community organizations on equitable workplace strategies.

Paul Adams, professor of biochemistry in Fulbright College, will discuss "DEI Funding Mechanisms to Target Gaps in STEM Achievement." Adams studies the biochemistry and biophysics of proteins that play roles in the onset of cancer, and his research has garnered more than $3.5 million in federal and state funding. Adams is currently the principal investigator of a $1 million NSF S-STEM grant to help provide a pathway for students from rural areas of Arkansas to pursue a STEM degree.
