International Trombone Festival Welcomes U of A Professor and Students

Razorbones, the U of A trombone ensemble, will perform at the 2022 International Trombone Festival July 13-16. The University of Central Arkansas will play host at its campus in Conway.
Both the large ensemble group, containing over 16 members, and the Razorbones Octet were selected as one of 13 collegiate ensembles to perform. The groups are under the direction of associate professor of trombone Cory Mixdorf. The Razorbones' performance will also premiere new works from composer Brian Sadler, in addition to other music pieces.
Along with the student ensembles, Mixdorf was selected to perform in the performing artist showcase and will play a solo piece written specifically for him. Called Song of Survival, the piece was composed by Susan Mutter to describe the journey of Mixdorf's son Meyer through diagnosis and treatment of medulloblastoma — a form of brain cancer most commonly found in children. It includes five movements: I. Meyer, II. Diagnosis–Prayer, III. Surgery, IV. Thiotepa and V. Coming Home!

"Susan Mutter was very hands-on in wanting to know the full story of Meyer, his surgery, his treatment and how the whole process affected our family. We spoke on the phone at length about it all. She wanted to remain true to the intent of the project. Throughout, we exchanged ideas which caused the piece to evolve to its current state. She was very welcoming to my thoughts," Mixdorf said.
The Blue Ridge Trombone Quartet, of which Mixdorf was a founding member in 2012, will be performing a full-length feature recital. Other members of the quartet include Nathan Dishman from Iowa State University, Drew Leslie from Colorado State University and Sean McGhee, Cincinnati-based freelance bass trombonist. This will be the group's first performance at the International Trombone Festival.
