FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), will be examining all aspects of the University of Arkansas Police Department including policy and procedures, management, operations, and support services and are inviting the public to provide comments on Monday, Feb. 14, 2022.

Verification by the commission is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation – a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence.

As part of the assessment, UAPD employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments regarding the UAPD’s ability to meet the required standards at a public information session by calling 479-313-4470. Comments will be taken starting at 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 14. If the line is busy, please call back.

Members of the community can also provide comments during a public hearing via Zoom. The Zoom meeting will take place on February 15, beginning at 1:30 pm. Registration is required and can be requested at cde001@uark.edu

Comments by phone or Zoom are limited to 5 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards.  A copy of the standards is available for review (by appointment only) at the University of Arkansas Police Department.  Contact Mr. Crandall Edwards at 479-575-6750 to schedule an appointment.

Persons wishing to offer written comments about UAPD’s ability to meet the standards for accreditation are requested to send correspondence to: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc. (CALEA), Box 424064, Washington, DC 20042-4064

The Accreditation Program Manager for the University of Arkansas Police Department is Crandall Edwards.  The assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from similar but out-of-state agencies.  The assessors will review written materials, conduct interviews, and inspect areas where compliance can be witnessed.

The assessors are:

  • Chief Tim Potts, Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne - team leader
  • Ms. Susan Lowrey, Accreditation Manager (Retired), University of Vermont Police Department - team member

Once the assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full Commission, which will then decide if the agency is to be granted accredited status.

Accreditation status lasts four years during which time the agency must submit annual reports and participate in annual remote, web-based assessments attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited.
