Professor Angie Maxwell to Moderate Q & A with Gloria Steinem this Wednesday

Faculty member Dr. Angie Maxwell will moderate a question and answer session with American journalist, political activist, and feminist Gloria Steinem.

Faculty member Angie Maxwell will moderate a question and answer session with American journalist, political activist, and feminist Gloria Steinem on Wednesday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m. at the Faulkner Performing Arts Center. Steinem's visit is part of the University of Arkansas student-sponsored Distinguished Lecture Series. 

Maxwell is the director of the Diane Blair Center of Southern Politics and Society, an associate professor of political science, and holder of the Diane Blair Endowed Chair in Southern Studies at the University of Arkansas. Maxwell is a Truman Scholar who received her Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Texas. She is the author of The Indicted South: Public Criticism, Southern Inferiority, and the Politics of Whiteness (UNC Press 2014) which won the V. O. Key Award for best book in southern politics, and The Long Southern Strategy: How Chasing White Voters in the South Changed American Politics (Oxford University Press, 2019). Her research and commentary have been featured in Henry Louis Gates' "Reconstruction" on PBS and on MSNBC's The Reid Report and The Cycle, as well as in the Washington Post, VoxSlate, Salon, The Progressive, and numerous academic journals.

The event is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required for the event and doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Please visit the Faulkner Performing Arts Center site for more information, including parking. The U of A currently requires the wearing of face coverings in all indoor venues. Audience members will be required to wear a face covering. 

Steinem began her career as a freelance writer in New York. She first gained recognition for her exposé, published in Show magazine in 1963, recounting her experience as an undercover bunny in Hugh Hefner's Manhattan Playboy Club. Steinem later worked as a political columnist and feature writer for New York magazine, again commanding national attention for her 1969 piece entitled "After Black Power, Women's Liberation".

Steinem is best known for her role in the women's liberation movement during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. She co-founded the Women's Action Alliance and the National Women's Political Caucus in 1971, Ms. Magazine and the Ms. Foundation for Women in 1972, Voters for Choice in 1979, and the Women's Media Center in 2004. Author of the bestselling My Life on the Road and recipient of numerous esteemed awards, including the Penney-Missouri Journalism Award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Steinem continues to express her feminist views and advocate for social equality.
