UA Career Development Center Shares Tips for Avoiding Employment Fraud

The U of A Career Development Center is seeing a dramatic increase in reports of employment scams and fraudulent job offers targeting students and recent alumni. As the job market continues to heat up, we'd like to share the following tips that may indicate a job is fraudulent:

• An employer reaches out to you with an unsolicited offer claiming to have been given your information by career services or another on campus office.
• The promise of a large salary for very little work - especially those that state thousands of dollars of income per month with little or no experience required.
• The job requires depositing checks into your account or wiring portions to other individuals or accounts or sending copies of personal documents.
• Positions in which you are offered any payment or reward in exchange for allowing the use of your bank account - often for depositing checks or transferring money.
• Look for email addresses not attached to a corporate web domain and poor use of the English language in emails such as incorrect grammar, capitalization and tenses.
• While there are legitimate opportunities for individuals to work from home, be sure to research before applying.

If you believe you are a victim of fraud resulting from a job listing, please contact the local (479-587-3555) and campus (479-575-2222) police as well. We also encourage all victims of email or internet scams to report them to the Federal Bureau of Investigation at www.ic3.gov.
