AAC Faculty Advisor of the Year Robert F. Saunders

Robert F. Saunders, Assistant Department Head for the Department of Electrical Engineering, was awarded the Academic Advising Council 2021 Outstanding Faculty Advisor of the Year award. Numerous students provided examples of how Saunders has helped to shape their academic and professional careers.

Students say that "it is very clear through his actions and words that Mr. Saunders cares deeply for his students" and that "he is an outstanding advisor, and I would not be the engineer I am without his guidance." Colleagues within the College of Engineering note how Saunders goes above and beyond for each and every student on top of teaching courses that require constant communications between himself and the students.

AAC recognizes one faculty advisor annually for their outstanding contributions. Applications are nominated by their departments and provide a detailed packet outline the individuals contributions. Criteria for the Outstanding Faculty Advisor of the Year award include strong interpersonal skills, frequent contact with advisees, a caring attitude toward students and participation in advisor development programs.

In his own words about advising and working with students:

What do you like best about working with students?

Watching students grow is probably the most fulfilling part of this job. Year after year advisors watch the students grow both in knowledge and wisdom. And when the student graduates, knowing we had some part to play in that individual that walks out our door to engage the professional world is truly uplifting.

What is something working with students has taught you about being an instructor or advisor?

Never get complacent in your material or what you know. There will always be a student out there that asks a different question, looks at the problem in a different way or has a situation only they could come up with. Be ready to engage them.

Any words of advice or helpful tips for other advisors on this campus?

Above all else learn to listen. Not all questions asked are the questions the student is asking. Learn to understand the individual you are talking to so you can hear the question they are asking. Only then can you really help.

About the AAC: The Academic Advising Council serves as the advisory group for undergraduate academic advising and reports to the provost regarding all matters related to its charge. The Academic Advising Council is charged with assisting the institution to increase the academic success and retention of undergraduate students by highlighting and providing additional support to the academic advising processes.
