Women's History Month: Sen. Hattie Caraway
Only 36 women have been elected to the U.S. Senate. Arkansas's Hattie Caraway was the first in 1932.
Today, although women make up 51% of the U.S. population, they hold 24% of U.S. Senate seats. Eighteen states have never elected a woman to the U.S. Senate.
Overall, according to the Interparliamentary Union, the U.S. ranks 68th of 195 countries for women's legislative representation.
