Women's History Month: Bessie Stringfield
Nicknamed the "Motorcycle Queen of Miami," Bessie Stringfield served as a dispatch rider for the U.S. Army in the 1940s during an era when straddling a motorcycle was considered unladylike. She is also the first African American woman to ride a motorcycle across the lower forty-eight, no small feat especially during the era of Jim Crow. Each year hundreds of women motorcyclists make an annual road trip in her honor.
