One of the founders of the Arkansas Folklore Society was U of A professor Mary Parler. Parler made significant contributions to the preservation of Ozark culture and study of folkways.

Parler traveled all over the state of Arkansas recording everyday people singing folk songs. More than 4,500 of these recordings can now be heard through the University Libraries digital collections website.
