'Broaching' as Technique in Counseling to Initiate Discussions on Diversity to be Program Topic

A Johns Hopkins University professor of counseling will address the concept of "broaching issues of diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism" in an online guest presentation hosted by the Counselor Education and Supervision degree program.

Professionals by their attendance are eligible for 2 continuing education units for licensure.

Day-Vines is associate dean for faculty development and a professor of Counseling and Human Development at the Baltimore university.

She will discuss "getting comfortable with the discomfort of discussing or broaching racial, ethnic and cultural factors with clients."

"Broaching allows us to point 'out the elephant in the room' to make discussion of race, ethnicity and culture less of an issue, barrier, or obstacle in treatment," Day-Vines has said.

Previously, Day-Vines held tenured faculty positions at The College of William and Mary and Virginia Tech. She earned her bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and master's and doctorate from North Carolina State University. She received a 2013 Exemplary Diversity Leadership Award from the Association of Multicultural Counseling and Development, a 2018 Excellence in Teaching Award at Johns Hopkins, and a 2019 Presidential Citation from the American Counseling Association in recognition of her scholarship on multiculturalism.

The lecture is the second in a series on diversity and inclusion within counseling education. The program is presented by the local Rho Alpha Beta chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, the Counseling Academic and Professional Honor Society International. The degree program is within the University of Arkansas College of Education and Health Professions.
