Music Offers Second in "Flip It and Reverse It" Series on Virtual Music Teaching

The Department of Music in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts & Sciences offers a second installment of the "Flip It and Reverse It" series on re-thinking music teaching for virtual spaces. The panel discussion is scheduled for 3:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 2 via Zoom. All music teachers are welcome, but registration is required. Click this link to register for the event.

In this session, we hear from three U of A music instructors as featured panelists: Professor Luaren Clare, Professor Jake Hertzog and Dr. Wing Lau. Each present their unique approaches to engaging with students during the COVID-19 pandemic and how they have handled remote teaching and learning. Clare and Hertzog are private lesson instructors in the department, working weekly with their studio music majors. Lau is a music theorist who teaches a variety of students on the fundamentals of music skills in written and aural theory.

"Flip It and Reverse It" is geared toward any music teacher from higher education to private instruction, and all are welcome. Look for more in this series in the coming months. A repository of all of the department's virutal series is housed at the Department's YouTube Channel.

About Lauren Clare: Clare is a native of Oklahoma City and proud citizen of the Chickasaw Nation. She comes to the U of A with a Master of Music degree in vocal performance from Oklahoma City University, where she graduated with high honors and was elected by faculty into the Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society's Alpha Upsilon Chapter. For the past 12 years, Clare has worked professionally as a vocalist in the jazz, pop and hip-hop worlds. She also serves in roles as a composer and producer with a 22-year background in classical piano. She currently curates an Emmy-nominated music project entitled The Allie Lauren Project. Most recently Clare has produced and composed works for Emmy Award-winning artist Jabee Williams and also for the Chickasaw Nation.

About Jake Hertzog: Hertzog is a critically acclaimed guitarist, composer and educator whose career to date has spanned nine albums as bandleader across jazz, rock and classical new music styles. He has toured throughout the U.S., Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and India and performed and recorded with a diverse cadre of artists including Randy Brecker, Ivan Neville, Mike Clarke, Blondie Chaplin, Anton Fig, Corey Glover, Barry Altschul, Dave Leibman, Ingrid Jensen and many others. As an educator, Hertzog has been an artist-in-residence and guest clinician in colleges and conservatories in the U.S., Europe and India. He created the instructional series "Hey Jazz Guy" for Guitar Player magazine and contributed over 30 articles to the publication.

About Wing Lau: Lau joined the Music Department at the U of A in the Fall of 2016. Her research focuses on rhythm and meter, and the relationship between performance and analysis. Her dissertation, Expressive Motivation of Meter Changes in Brahms's Lieder, provides a taxonomy of notated meter changes with regard to their durations and their relationships with harmony, form and poetic declamation. She has published with Music Theory Online and has presented at the international Doctors in Performance Festival Conference, the national meeting of the Society for Music Theory and numerous regional conferences. Wing has a Ph.D. in Music Theory from the University of Oregon and a M.M. in Piano Performance from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Prior to her position at the U of A she was an instructor at the University of Oregon and Lane Community College. She also directed a local children's choir in Oregon.
