Health Center Administers 1,700 Flu Vaccines at Drive-Thru Events
Over the span of two drive-through clinics, Pat Walker Health Center administered over 1,700 flu vaccines to the University of Arkansas community — a record for flu vaccines administered by medical staff in such a short timeframe.
Getting the flu vaccine is the best way to prevent contracting the flu, and this year medical experts are stressing how important getting the flu vaccine will be as COVID-19 transmission continues to impact communities.
"A flu shot is more important than ever this year," said Dr. Huda Sharaf, medical director for Pat Walker Health Center. "Not only is the flu vaccine the single best way to protect against the flu virus, but getting a flu vaccine this season can help reduce the burden on our health care systems responding to the COVID-19 pandemic."
Don't Wait: Get Your Flu Vaccine Now
Students, faculty and staff still needing to receive their annual flu vaccine can schedule to get theirs by calling 479-575-7723. Fall 2020: To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, Pat Walker Health Center will not offer a walk-in flu vaccine clinic this semester. Appointments (and masks) are required for flu vaccines administered at the clinic.
The cost of the flu vaccine is $20 for students and $50 for faculty/staff. The vaccine can also be billed to insurance, as many health insurance plans cover the cost of the flu vaccine.
Health Center officials anticipate a higher-than-normal demand for the flu vaccine this season, so medical experts are strongly encouraging everyone to get their vaccine as soon as possible.
The CDC strongly recommends everyone aged six-months and older receive an annual flu vaccine. Getting vaccinated early is the best way to ensure you are protected throughout the entire flu season.
