The course will be taught by Richard Ham, associate director of the Master of Science in Operations and Master of Science in Engineering Management Programs.

Gov. Asa Hutchinson and senior leaders from government and industry will be among presenters in a course on resilient design and crisis management offered as part of the Master of Science in Operations Management program this fall.

The M.S.O.M. program is offering OMGT 577V (OMGT 5943), Resilient Design and Crisis Management for Operations in the second eight-week session of fall 2020.

Resilient design crisis management techniques focus on effectively planning, responding and recovering to unplanned events and compensate for uncertainty. The course is highly interactive and includes distinguished speakers with real-world experience in federal, state and local government, as well in private industry. Speakers include:

  • Gov. Asa Hutchinson, who was previously the undersecretary of homeland security for border and transportation security
  • Ken Senser, former senior vice president, former global investigations, security, aviation, and travel for Walmart
  • Kelly Hogan, former assistant administrator for the Transportation Security Administration
  • Marty Matlock, executive director of the University of Arkansas Resiliency Center.

Additional panel discussions with crisis management experts are also planned for the course.

The course is in hybrid format and offers a section for synchronous video from home, live and asynchronous modes. Graduate students enrolled in the course receive priority for the lecture series, but there will be some seating available if reserved in advance.

For more information and an overview of the course, this video provides more information: MSOM Webinar.

The course will be taught by Richard Ham, associate director of the Master of Science in Operations and Master of Science in Engineering Management Programs. He has more than 35 years of subject matter expertise and has led the design of courses in homeland security, law enforcement, security operations, emergency management, risk assessment and counter-terrorism courses for the United States Department of State delivered around the globe.

Ham said crisis management is a constant need for organizations.

"All lines of business, government and individuals are either preparing for, responding to or recovering from an unexpected event," he said. "This course provides the tools we all need to reduce the consequence of uncertaint to respond  and recover a worldwide pandemic or  something as simple as how to adjust to online classes."
