Civil Engineering Graduate Student Awarded American Water Works Association Scholarship

Civil engineering doctoral student Samuel Hodges has earned the American Water Scholarship to further his research into sample gathering technology for use in drinking water.

Hodges' research focuses on passive sampling technology as it applies to disinfection by-products in drinking water distribution systems.

The $5,000 scholarship from the American Water Works Association was sponsored by American Water to assist with the development of professionals interested in service to the water industry. 

Hodges said the scholarship will provide financial peace of mind as he pursues a career in the water industry.

"As a husband, father and doctoral student, I often find myself juggling priorities. To have a greater measure of financial security allows me to worry about one less thing and focus on the exciting and interesting work I am pursuing," he said.  "I am grateful to American Water for investing in young professionals, and I hope my current and future work can impact human lives in a way that is important and lasting."

Zia Bukhari, principle scientist for water and wastewater research at American Water, said the scholarship program is critical for the future of the water industry.

"By attracting scholars to the field of water research, which is vital to the future of our business, we hope to develop and tap their talent for the long-term benefit of our communities and the environment," Bukhari said. "We are honored to have helped all these recipients to advance their research studies."

In the coming semesters, Hodges will work with Julian Fairey, associate professor of civil engineering. 

"Sam has a great work ethic with a rare combination of scientific expertise and practical engineering knowledge," Fairey said. "I am thrilled Sam received this national recognition from AWWA, as beyond the obvious monetary benefit, it will help promote his doctoral research to water professionals across the country."

American Water, founded in 1886, is celebrating its 10th year offering this scholarship through the AWWA scholarship program. Hodges was recognized through a virtual ceremony on June 23.
