Department of Music to Begin Living Room Concert Series

While people can't get out to enjoy concerts in person these days, the Department of Music has decided to bring the concerts directly to the public with their Living Room Concert Series, starting at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, on their Facebook page.

One of the performers, guitar instructor Jake Hertzog, explains why going online with the idea was important.

"There are so many reasons we are delighted to begin our living room concert series. Since the touring and live concert business is suspended for a time, the live music world has gone virtual and it's important that we participate in this variation on our art form, and model that for our students so they feel a sense of encouragement," he said.

"We also hope that performing streaming house concerts is another way we can stay connected to our University of Arkansas community through music. We are proud of the hundreds of free musical events that we offer every year and continuing to perform online carries our presence forward."

Professor Eric Troiano, saxophone, will kick off the series on April 22, followed by oboe professor Theresa Delaplain on April 23, and concluded by Jake Hertzog on April 24.

While the desire to share their music with students and fellow music lovers is extremely important, they are also doing this series for a more local reason, says Hertzog.

"The possibilities for musicians to give back through their music are inspiring and we are all feel deeply for those in need. Using music as a way to raise money and awareness for the work the Jane B. Gearhart Full Circle Food Pantry is doing to help folks is an important example we can participate in helping the community that we serve."

The Facebook page will have a link to the Gearhart Food Pantry during the concert. Viewers will be able to give at any time during the concert and after it has concluded.
