Guest lecturer Shuchi Karim will speak on scholar activism.

The University of Arkansas Scholars at Risk committee is pleased to announce the 2019 Scholars at Risk Endowed Lecture, "Scholar Activism: Importance of Academic Freedom and Solidarity in Challenging Times," to be given by Shuchi Karim, a scholar in Gender and International Development from Bangladesh.

The lecture is part of International Education Week (November 18-22), a national celebration recognizing the benefits of international education and global exchanges of students and scholars.

Karim has an active interest in LGBT rights, youth and sexuality and education policies.She currently teaches in the Department of Women's Studies and Feminist Research at Western University in London, Ontario Canada.

The lecture will take place at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, in the Center for Multicultural and Diversity Education, Arkansas Union room 403. The event is free and open to the public, with reception following.

Scholars at Risk is an international network of higher education institutions and individuals working to protect scholars and promote academic freedom. The U of A is an institutional member of the Scholars at Risk network.

The lecture is hosted by the University of Arkansas Scholars at Risk committee and co-sponsored by the U of A's Graduate School and International Education, Department of Sociology and Criminology, Comparative Literature & Cultural Studies Program, International Studies Program, U of A Center for Multicultural and Diversity Education, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Gender Studies Program, Honors College, and the Graduate and Professional Student Congress.

The 2019 Scholars at Risk Endowed Lecture is also made possible through an endowed gift from Dick Bennett, U of A professor emeritus of English.
