Events Slated for Diversity and Inclusion Month

The University of Arkansas' Office for Diversity and Inclusion will host a series of events for the campus and regional community in the month of September. Titled "Inclusion Includes You," the monthly celebration includes a kickoff event, workshop, lecture and conference.

"A culture and climate of diversity and inclusion is a top priority for our campus as it is central to our academic mission and our campus success," said Yvette Murphy-Erby, vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion. "Hosting September as our annual month to celebrate diversity and inclusion is as a reminder as we start the new academic year of this important priority. September also serves as a jump start of the many D&I related meetings, programs, events and activities that various units on our campus will host over the year."

The events are free and open to the public, but registration is required for certain events.

Events scheduled in September are:

• Tuesday, Sept. 10: A kickoff event in the Arkansas Union Ballroom from 11:15 a.m.-1 p.m. Participants will take a group photo and hear from U of A Chancellor Joe Steinmetz and Murphy-Erby. Lunch will be provided. Annual meetings for various diversity and inclusion groups on campus will be held at the end of the event from 12:15-1 p.m.
• Tuesday, Sept. 17: "Becoming a Student Ready University: Achieving Equity in Student Learning and Success," a workshop for the campus community held in the Arkansas Union Ballroom. It will be led by Tia Brown McNair, the vice president for diversity, equity and student success for the American Association of Colleges and Universities. Attendees can participate in a morning session from 9 a.m.-noon or an afternoon session from 1-4 p.m., with lunch served to all between noon-1 p.m. Those interested can register on HogSync.
• Thursday, Sept. 19: "The Everyday Bullying and Harm of Identity-Based Microaggressions: Recognizing and Intervening," a lecture by Dr. Yolanda Flores Niemann at the Reynolds Center Auditorium from 10 am.-noon. Those interested in attending can complete a registration form.
• Thursday, Sept. 19: A symposium on the Elaine Massacre presented by the Pryor Center from 9 a.m.-4:15 p.m. at 1 East Center St. in Fayetteville. The symposium examines the Elaine Race Massacre that occurred in 1919 and features prominent scholars on the subject.
