Faulkner Center Announces New Sound Production Internship Class

This fall, the Jim and Joyce Faulkner Performing Arts Center at the University of Arkansas will offer its first-ever interactive internship class for academic credit, Cooperative Education: Live Audio and Sound Mixing (ARSC310V).

The Faulkner Center has developed this elective internship class, open to all majors, to give students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience with a seasoned professional in the field of audio production.

Adam Putman, technical director of the Faulkner Center, will teach the internship which is a one-hour elective that meets in person on Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 9:40 a.m. The course is limited to 15 students, who must be enrolled by Friday, Aug. 30. Students should contact their academic advisor to register.

By the end of the internship class, students will be able to:

• Mix audio for bands, soloists and events
• Troubleshoot issues related to audio signal path
• Mix monitors for an artist without feedback
• Identify and choose the correct microphone for the situation
• Setup and tear down a PA system
• Comfortably mix on most digital consoles after a short acclimation
• Create multi-track recordings of live audio productions

About the Jim and Joyce Faulkner Performing Arts Center: The newest performing arts center at the University of Arkansas — a renovation of the old Field House — is named the Jim and Joyce Faulkner Performing Arts Center, in honor of the couple's major gift to the project. Completed in September 2017, this world-class performance venue is 39,400 square feet, with seating for 587, and a stage that can accommodate as many as 250 performers. The center is the main performance venue for the university's J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences Department of Music and hosts guest musical activities for the university and Northwest Arkansas community.
