HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Summer activities will continue at Garvan Woodland Gardens, with sprinklers running in the Children's Garden each Thursday and an adult watercolor painting class slated for beginners.

The August Art Exhibit will feature work by the Monday Studio Artists: Caryl Joy Young, Barbara Seibel and Shirley Anderson. All residents of Hot Springs Village, they are experienced artists with combined expertise in exhibition, teaching and leadership. The exhibit will be displayed in the Magnolia Room all month.

"Thirsty Thursdays" will continue from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29. Sprinklers will be running in the Children's Garden and at the Ellipse.

A "Healing Gardens" workshop will take place from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Aug. 1 in the Magnolia Room. The presentation will discuss theories supporting the idea of gardens as healing spaces and explain a set of design principles for application in the creation of healing garden spaces. The goal is to help tie psychological, physiological and emotional responses to the environmental experience and create awareness of these elements in private home and garden settings.

The final "Summer Photowalk" will begin at 9 a.m. Aug. 10 in the Magnolia Room. The topic is "Shooting in the Shade." The walk will begin with a brief classroom session to discuss lighting, composition and focus tips. Participants then will walk through the tree-shaded Warren's Woodland Walk and then explore the unique rocks and cave in the Evans Children's Adventure Garden. Any kind of camera, including smartphones and tablets, may be used.

"Watercolors in the Garden" will be held from 1-4 p.m. Aug. 10 in the Magnolia Room. Cynthia Schainink will lead the class. The subject is the waterfall below the koi pond in the Garden of the Pine Wind. Participants will trace a drawing of the waterfall onto watercolor paper and then follow Schainink as she demonstrates each step to a finished painting. No experience is required, and all materials will be provided.

"ADLS Stations" will take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon Aug. 14 in the Magnolia Room and the Evans Children's Adventure Garden. Each station has an indoor learning component and an extension project to take outdoors. Learning stations focus on the arts, design, literature and science. Extended projects are available for students attending multiple sessions. These facilitated drop-in learning sessions are for children ages 8-12.

A seed swap is planned for the Celebrate Fall Day on Oct. 12. Gardeners are invited to save the date for this event, where they will be able to exchange their open-pollinated, non-hybrid plant seeds.
