Libraries and ASG Provide Test Prep Books for MCAT, GRE, More

Twenty-four new test prep books are now available to University of Arkansas students thanks to a partnership between the Libraries and the Associated Student Government. Subjects include law, medicine, nursing and more. These materials are located in the Course Reserves of Mullins Library, and students may check out one of these books at a time for a maximum of seven days.

"The University of Arkansas Associated Student Government has made a commitment to promoting student success," said Warrington Sebree, ASG senator at large. "This promise holds true throughout our students' time here on campus and extends beyond to their post-undergraduate endeavors. Applying for and getting admitted to a post-undergraduate institution is a stressful and financially burdensome process. This fiscal requirements that accompany this process often times deters students from even applying and those that do apply generally may not perform as well due their lack of resources. I chose to write this bill funding the purchasing of the preparatory materials in order to give all students, especially those with economic hardships, the opportunity to pursue their educational dreams, and I am glad my colleagues who voted for its passage felt this was a pertinent issue, as well. It is our hope that all students learn that these materials are available, and that they are duly utilized. We hope that our students are able to find success beyond their undergraduate education as they represent our great institution in the real world for many years to come."

The tests covered are the Dental Admission Test (DAT), Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), Graduate Record Exam (GRE), Law School Admission Test (LSAT), Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), Optometry Admission Test (OAT), Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT), Praxis Core and various nursing school entrance exams.

These new materials add to the Libraries' existing collection of test prep materials, which can be checked out for the regular 16-week loan period.

"I really appreciate ASG's support of the University Libraries, and I am excited for what these test prep materials will mean for the success of our students," said Kathleen Lehman, head of user services for University Libraries. "Preparing for exams like the GRE and MCAT can be a real financial challenge if students don't have the means to purchase study guides, themselves. With the study guide collection ASG purchased, the Libraries are able to offer more recent study materials and increase the breadth of guides that students have access to."
