College Credit for Singing? Yes, You Can Do That With the Department of Music

Every semester the Department of Music offers a variety of courses that are open to all students at the University of Arkansas campus. From choral ensembles to private lessons, students can dig into music studies without majoring in music. For students who once sang in choirs in high school or in community settings, the department invites you to participate in a number of classes during your college career. 

In addition to widening your circle of friends, being in an ensemble or taking voice classes could help develop a person's confidence in public speaking and might even help improve breathing, posture, and mental alertness! If you like to sing, we have a class for that. All MUAC and MUEN classes count toward UA degrees as Fine Arts credits or can be taken as elective hours. 

Get serious about music or just have fun, come sing in the Department of Music.

VOICE INSTRUCTION

MUAC 1381. Class Instruction in Voice. 1 Hour (register directly through UAConnect)

  • Group instruction to introduce basic vocal techniques (e.g., breathing, projection, posture, performance skills, etc.)
  • Applicable to all forms and genres of singing (e.g., classical, musical theatre, commercial music, gospel, etc.)
  • Improve confidence or presentation skills for public speaking (e.g., teachers, business professionals, communications, medicine, etc.) or for those who just want to sing for themselves

MUAP 100V - 500V. Applied Secondary Voice I. 1-2 Hours. (Interested students should email macrae@uark.edu or music@uark.edu)

  • Private instruction to introduce and/or refine basic techniques in one-on-one lessons
  • Applicable to all forms and genres of singing
  • Can be repeated for up to 4 hours of degree credit

CHORAL ENSEMBLES

MUEN 1591 - 5591. Women's Chorus. 1 Hour. (register directly through UAConnect)

  • No audition required
  • Open to all female students at the U of A.
  • The ensemble performs a wide variety of exciting choral literature specifically composed for women's voices.
  • Perform in concert settings and occasionally collaborate with Men's Chorus and University Symphony Orchestra.
  • Rehearsal: T/R 2:00-3:15pm.

MUEN 1411 - 5411. Men's Chorus. 1 Hour. (register directly through UAConnect)

  • No audition required
  • Open to all male students at the U of A.
  • The ensemble performs a wide variety of excellent choral literature and gives several concerts a year.
  • Perform in concert settings and occasionally collaborate with Men's Chorus and University Symphony Orchestra.
  • Rehearsal: T/R 2:00-3:15pm.

  • Open to all students at the U of A.
  • The mission of the Inspirational Chorale is to keep the black sacred music tradition alive.
  • The ensemble provides a forum where university students, regardless of ethnicity, can perform the various genres of the tradition.

  • Section 2: F 2:30-3:50pm

  • The U of A's oldest choral ensemble.
  • The ensemble tours nationally and internationally, giving approximately 10 concerts each academic year.
