New Career Connections Course Starts in Spring 2019

Are you or do you know a student looking for more tailored, hands-on career advice?

If you want to help yourself or a student you know get a head start on creating their career path and lining up post-graduation opportunities, then the new Career Connections course (ARSC 3013) at the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences may help.

This elective course meets in person on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:05-3:55 p.m. with online activities on Fridays. This class counts toward graduation requirements.

Topics range from career lectures, to life design activities, to creating an online ePortfolio for potential employers.

The 3000-level course will provide a platform to connect students with employers while also giving students the opportunity to look into diverse career communities.

The class will incorporate life-design, a concept employed at Stanford University, that uses human-centered design concepts and applies them to career planning.

The course is co-taught by Erica Estes, the director of employer relations for Fulbright College, who has more than a decade of experience helping students find internships and careers.

"It's going to be an excellent course and very interactive," Estes said. "It should also be very fun and directly applicable to creating — or designing — the future career and life you envision."

Co-instructor Jackson Jennings, assistant director of STEAM student success and clinical assistant professor, agreed, and said he's looking forward to teaching the course with Estes.
