The Japanese Language and Proficiency Test is scheduled to take place in Kimpel Hall on Sunday, Dec. 2, and 130 examinees have registered for this year's exam.

The Japanese Program in the Department of World Language, Literatures and Cultures administers the Japanese Language and Proficiency Test every December as a way to help examinees certify their current Japanese proficiency levels.

The test has been offered by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services since 1984 as a reliable means of evaluating and certifying the Japanese proficiency of non-native speakers.

It assesses examinees' overall Japanese language proficiency by an internationally recognized standard. Examinees take the exam at five different levels, with N1 the highest and N5 the lowest  

The Japanese Language and Proficiency Test certificates offer various advantages, ranging from recognition as academic credit and graduation certification at schools to preferential treatment at companies and acknowledgement of qualification in society.

The University of Arkansas is the ninth U.S. test site for the Japanese Language and Proficiency Test. It is the only international certification examination that is authorized by the Japanese government.
