Information on How to Report Sexual Violence Posted Across Campus

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – University of Arkansas students returning to campus from fall break are finding something new: informational stickers have been placed in restroom stalls of most buildings on campus, with information on how to report sexual or relationship violence.

“Last year the Title IX office conducted a student ‘Campus Climate Survey’ and one of the things we learned was that a significant percentage of students didn’t know how to report sexual assault or sexual misconduct,” said Tyler Farrar, the U of A Title IX coordinator. “Since the university is committed to keeping students safe from sexual assaualt or misconduct, we considered this a serious problem. We have the resources on campus to help students, but we needed to do a better job of getting that information to them.”

The idea for the stickers – and their placement – came from a staff member who saw similar stickers in restroom stalls while visiting Mississippi State University. An ad hoc committee including Farrar, representatives of the Pat Walker Health Center, Student Affairs, the Housing Office and University Relations discussed and endorsed the idea, then approved the sticker content and design. The sticker was designed by the Creative Services department in University Relations.

The sticker concept and design were approved by the Chancellor’s Executive Committee. The Dean of Students Office paid to have the stickers printed.

“This seemed like a very effective way to get important information to our students, and a worthwhile thing to do, “ said Melissa Harwood-Rom, dean of students. “Even if a person doesn’t remember all the information in the aftermath of a traumatic situation – they know where to find it.”

The stickers provide students information about several options for action:

  • Call 9-1-1 if in danger.
  • Find more information at respect.uark.edu.
  • Contact the University Victim Advocate at 479-575-7252 for confidential assistance.
  • File a formal report with the University at report.uark.edu or call the Title IX Office at 479 575-7111.

The stickers were installed by Facilities Management staff and by staff and volunteers in Student Affairs and the Housing Office.
