Architects Michael Meredith and Hilary Sample to Present 'Recent Work' Lecture on Sept. 14

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Michael Meredith and Hilary Sample will present a lecture at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, in Ken and Linda Sue Shollmier Hall, Room 250 of Vol Walker Hall, on the University of Arkansas campus, as part of the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design lecture series.
Meredith and Sample are the principals and cofounders of MOS Architects in New York City. MOS is a partnership that works together to collect, gather and process a range of design trials through playful experimentation and serious research. Meredith is an associate professor at Princeton University School of Architecture, and Sample is an associate professor at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation.
In their lecture, titled "Recent Work," they will discuss their firm's work across a wide range of scales, including master planning, furniture, housing and books, in relation to questions of form, material and spatial organization. Meredith and Sample will consider the use of new form-finding methods as a means of generating new casual architectural organizations and the role of vernacular in generating "vaguely familiar" formal and material strategies, and they will examine the effects of "hot and cold" representational techniques in generating, developing and communicating architectural concepts.
Meredith and Sample founded their internationally recognized architecture practice in 2007, and the firm has since received the 2015 Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum National Design Award in Architecture and the 2010 American Academy of Arts and Letters Architecture Award. Several of the firm's individual works have been honored with numerous awards and distinctions as well, including the 2015 Global Holcim Award for sustainable construction, for Community Center No. 3 (Lali Gurans Orphanage); the 2014 accession of the firm's modular, off-grid House No. 5 (Museum of Outdoor Arts Element House) into the MoMA, Architecture and Design Collection; and the acquisition of House No. 3 (Lot No. 6 / Ordos) into the permanent collection of The Art Institute of Chicago.
The school is pursuing continuing education credits for this lecture through the American Institute of Architects and the American Society of Landscape Architects.
