Malshe to Present '3D Printing of Food' on Sept. 10 at the Food Science Department

Ajay P. Malshe, Distinguished Professor in the University of Arkansas Mechanical Engineering Department, will present "3D Printing of Food" at 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, at the Food Science Department. The seminar will be in Room C-2. The FDSC building is located two miles north of the main campus at 2650 N. Young Ave.

Printing, especially on a flat surface (in x-y plane) is a centuries-old art. In recent time, third axis (z-axis) has been exploited for realizing new design opportunities unparalleled in their performance for various industry sectors. Human friendly food has been a science, an engineering and an art from the origin of human civilization. Connecting the dots of these two historic and must-to-have distant apart areas are poised to open new opportunities for benefiting society always demanding "good, fast and cheap" in quality, delivery and prices, respectively. This talk will introduce potential new prospects to food scientists, engineers and businesses in the state, where food and farming is one of the top must-to-have revenue generators.

Malshe is an American educator, inventor, entrepreneur and expression artist. At the University of Arkansas he is the Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering and holds the 21st Century Endowed Chair Professor of Materials, Manufacturing and System Integration.

Through 25 plus years of leadership experience as a scientist, engineer, entrepreneur and educator his interdisciplinary research and teaching emphasis has included bio-inspired science and engineering, advanced materials, manufacturing processes, manufacturing scale up, machining, MEMS, and electronics and photonics packaging and integration.

He has won numerous national and international awards and honors including election to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE); Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME)-S.M. Wu Research Implementation Award; three Prestigious Edison Awards for Inventor and Innovation; Tibbett Award, US Small Business Association sponsored by EPA for successful tech transfer; R&D 100 Award, Oscar of Innovations; Fellowships of the International Academy of Production Engineering (CIRP), the American Society of Materials (ASM), the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME) and the Institute of Physics (IoP), London, England) and many more.

He has trained more than 1,200 bachelor's students, 50 master's and doctoral students, and 20 post-doctoral fellows, and he has trained multiple working professional scientists and engineers. He has published more than 225 peer reviewed technical publications in top archival journals including CIRP Annals, Physical Review Letters and many others, as well as more than 10 books and book chapters. Malshe has more than 25 U.S. and international patents resulting in an excess of 70 nanomanufactured products for mechanical and electrical machines to enhance their efficiency, durability and sustainability used by multiple global corporations. More than a decade, as an inventor and entrepreneur him and his world class team's efforts have delivered award winning products and knowledge-based jobs in Arkansas and U.S. including for many U of A graduates. He has delivered more than 70 invited/distinguished/keynote talks across the world in prestigious forums.
