Stop and Look Before You Go Into a Crosswalk
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – U of A campus crosswalks can be dangerous if people aren’t paying attention, especially in the first days of a new semester, as everyone adjusts to a new environment.
It’s state and city law that drivers must yield to a a pedestrian in a street crosswalk. That doesn’t mean you can count on them to stop when you step into the road.
Pedestrians also have a responsibility to look up from their phones, or pause in a conversation to check for traffic before they enter a crosswalk, just as a matter of personal safety. Make eye contact with an approaching driver before entering a crosswalk.
Keep an eye out for bicycles as well, in traffic or in the crosswalk, not to mention the occasional skateboarder.
