Honors Music Student Recognized for Advocacy in Music Education
Maggie Matheny
Margaret "Maggie" Matheny, a music education major in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences and a member of the Honors College, will be honored this weekend at a statewide convention. Matheny will be presented with an advocacy award at the Arkansas Music Educators Association annual convention in Hot Springs. The award recognizes Matheny for her work representing the state of Arkansas at the National Association for Music Education's Collegiate Advocacy Summit, held in Washington, D.C.
The collegiate advocacy summit is a four-day event in conjunction with the National Assembly of State Music Education Presidents. As part of the summit, Matheny met face to face with U.S. legislators and their staffs in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives offices on Capitol Hill, engaging in discussions about the importance of music education in the public schools.
She also participated in advocacy training that she is incorporating into music education professional development seminars for students and area music educators sponsored on campus by the University of Arkansas collegiate music education chapter. Matheny currently serves as president of the University of Arkansas chapter of the National Association for Music Education.
