Opportunity for Artists to Submit Proposal for Razorback Remembrance Art
Every two years the University of Arkansas hosts Razorback Remembrance, a program that commemorates students who have passed away. The remembrance is held to honor and acknowledge the contributions that these students have made to the Razorback family and beyond. Each ceremony now features a work of art created specifically for that Razorback Remembrance.
While the Razorback Remembrance has been held for several years, the addition of the art was new at the last ceremony in the spring of 2016.
"Although we've only done this (art submission) once before, the reaction from the families was immeasurable, and I am hopeful this develops into a tradition," said Monica Holland, associate dean of students for Student Affairs "It was clear that the families appreciated the gesture and looked forward to revisiting the artwork in the future."
Local artists, students, faculty and staff are encouraged to create a proposal for an original art piece that is meant to honor and recognize those students who have died during their time at the University of Arkansas.
"The addition of the art work provides those within the U of A community the opportunity to demonstrate, in their own unique and artistic way, how these students, who are gone too soon, continue to impact our lives," Holland said.
Art commissioned for the Razorback Remembrance will be displayed throughout the year in a designated space in the Arkansas Union so that families can return and reflect on their loved ones. The art is also used for the event's invitations and programs, and a small printed copy is provided to attendees as a keepsake from the event.
The artist chosen to create art for the 2018 Razorback Remembrance ceremony will receive $500 compensation for work and materials. The commissioned artist will be invited to speak at the ceremony about their piece.
Artists seeking commission for Razorback Remembrance are invited to submit a digital portfolio to Holland (email: mholland@uark.edu). Use the subject line "Razorback Remembrance Art Submission." Format submissions as a bundled PDF document, total file size not to exceed 10 Mb, including the following:
- Letter of interest
- 3-5 images of previously completed work
- 1-5 images of preparatory studies for work to be considered for exhibition at Razorback Remembrance (or the work itself, if already completed)
- An inventory of all enclosed images, listing title, date, medium, and dimensions
- Artist statement (no more than 500 words, please)
- Artist resume
Submissions received on or before Sept. 25 will be given full consideration. For the chosen applicant, the artwork must be completed (gallery ready) and delivered to the Division of Student Affairs by Feb. 12, 2018.
