Engineering Expert to Speak on Past, Present and Future Perspectives of Research and Education
At 1:50 p.m. on Monday, May 1, Louis Martin-Vega will present a talk titled "Engineering Research and Education: Past, Present and Future Perspectives." The talk will take place in Bell Engineering Center, room 2269.
In a description of his talk, Martin-Vega explained: "The world of engineering research and education is evolving rapidly from one that has been primarily discipline based to one driven by cross-cutting interdisciplinary work that is more responsive to societal needs and challenges. This talk will describe how various entities in the U.S. such as the National Academy of Engineering, the National Science Foundation, and the American Society of Engineering Education have driven this change and how it has impacted both the research and educational directions of a major U.S. College of Engineering. The talk will also provide thoughts on the relevance of these changes to future directions in engineering education and research.”
Martin-Vega has served as dean of the College of Engineering at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, since 2006. Prior to joining NC State, he spent five years as dean of engineering at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. He has also held several prestigious positions at the National Science Foundation, including acting head of its Engineering Directorate and director of its Division of Design, Manufacture and Industrial Innovation. His research and teaching interests are in the areas of industrial engineering, manufacturing, logistics and distribution, operations management and production and service systems. He is the author or co-author of more than 100 journal articles, book chapters and other publications and has made over 200 keynote and related presentations at national and international forums.
