Sabon Receives Award From Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences Affirmative Action Committee

Lauren Sabon, visiting assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, was recently named recipient of the Dorothy Bracey/Janice Joseph Minority and Women New Scholar Award from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences Affirmative Action Committee.

The annual award recognizes outstanding academic contributions by new minority and women scholars. The award was established in honor of Janice Joseph, the first foreign-born person, and Dorothy Bracey, the first woman, to serve as ACJS presidents.

The Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences is an international organization whose 2,800 members disseminate knowledge related to research, policy, education and practice within the field of criminal Justice. ACJS also promotes criminal justice education among scholars, professionals and students

"Being named the recipient of the 2017 Dorothy Bracey/Janice Joseph Minority and Women New Scholar Award is a great honor for a sociology and criminal justice faculty," Sabon said.

Anna Zajicek, chair of the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice, agreed.

"This is an important honor for Lauren, and one that she absolutely deserves," Zajicek said. "She is a remarkable mentor to our students and an excellent teacher and scholar. We are very fortunate to have Lauren on our faculty."

Sabon joined the university in 2014. Since this time she has amassed several teaching recognitions and awards. Her service to the department, Fulbright College, the University of Arkansas, and to the discipline has truly been remarkable, and includes serving as a faculty advisor to Lambda Alpha Epsilon Fraternity (ΛΑΕ), Zajicek said.

About the Department: The Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice offers three degree programs and two honor societies; affiliation with three research units: the Community and Family Institute, the Terrorism Research Center, and the Center for Social Research; and research emphases in community, crime, law, social inequality, social psychology, culture, organizations and social networks.
