Instructional Courses Offered in Self-Defense, Lifeguarding, Dance, and More
The spring 2017 semester brings a variety of non-credit and continued learning opportunities in aquatics, dance, and health & safety topics for students, UREC members, faculty/staff, and Arkansas Alumni Association members. Ballet dance, beginning swim lessons, lifeguard certification and American Red Cross CPR/First Aid/AED Certification are some of the classes offered through University Recreation.
Krav Maga Self Defense is a program that University Recreation will offer beginning Feb. 14. This popular self-defense method incorporates hand-to-hand combat techniques developed by the Israeli Military. This eight-week beginner's class will cover self-defense against a wide array of attacks such as chokes, bear hugs, and shirt grabs. No experience or prior training is required and classes are offered on Tuesday evenings or Friday afternoons. Interested, but not sure if the class is for you? The first class session is a free demo class where participants can meet the instructor and get a class preview.
Dance classes will include ballet and swing dance. The eight-week Ballet class begins Friday, Feb. 17, and will follow the Cecchetti Method, focusing on balance, poise, strength, elevation, and elasticity. The Social Ballroom class is a 6-week introduction focused on the basics of popular partner dances including Foxtrot, East Coast Swing, and Waltz. This beginner session, starting Wednesday, Feb. 15. Both of these classes are open to all levels; no prior knowledge or dance experience is required. Aquatics program offerings include Beginning Swim Lessons for youth ages 5-12, as well as adults aged 13 and up. Lessons are designed to introduce participants to aquatic environments and develop basic skills including floating, breathing, and basic locomotion. The next session of beginning swim lesson sessions for both youth and adults are Monday/Wednesday evenings begin March 27.
Multiple American Red Cross class dates for CPR/First Aid/AED Certification classes and Lifeguard Certification will be offered during the 2017 semester. These classes can help students fulfill academic or employer requirements, and can also be packaged and brought to specific departments on campus.
UREC community programs are open to registration by students, UREC members, UA faculty/staff, and active Arkansas Alumni Association members.
