Win Prizes for Walking or Jogging During Fitober

October is National Walking Month, and University Recreation will celebrate by again holding the annual "Fitober" event. Participants may walk or jog during the entire month of October to get fit while also becoming eligible to win prizes. Fitober participants can log all daily activity that is done on foot from Saturday, Oct. 1, to Monday, Oct. 31, after registering at fitober.uark.edu.

"I always enjoy when UREC offers Fitober each year," said Kathy McSpadden, fiscal support specialist. "Tracking my mileage through the UREC software always motivates me and I end up walking more than I normally would each day throughout the month."

Participants who log 50 miles or more of any "on foot" activity will receive a pair of performance socks with the UREC logo.

"I appreciated the extra motivation to stay active through the month of October and the quality of the socks was an added bonus," said Jessica Lea Williams, Office of Admissions.

"The surgeon general's recommendation for a healthy lifestyle is to accumulate 150 minutes of activity each week," said Casey Fant, assistant director of fitness and wellness for University Recreation. "This event is always an excellent way for the community to stay engaged in their health and fitness."

Fitober encourages the university community to get active during, and stay active after, the month of October. There is no cost to participate in Fitober, and all university faculty, staff and students can participate, as a UREC membership is not required.

"October is a beautiful month on our campus to get outside and be active," said Shaina Hayutin, graduate assistant for fitness and wellness. "It's always a perfect time to refresh your personal fitness goals before the holidays."
