University of Arkansas Children's Choir Returns From Tour to New York City
The University of Arkansas Children's Choir, directed by Rachel Cornett, just returned from a 5-day tour to New York City. The traveling group, consisting of approximately 50 students from Northwest Arkansas schools, headed east on June 8th.
While in New York City, they performed at the United Nations and at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, and participated in a clinic with Nancy Shankman, NYU music education professor and former director of music for the New York City Public Schools.
These talented and enthusiastic singers also had the opportunity to visit highlights of the city, including Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the Sept. 11 Memorial, and attend Broadway's "Matilda."
The University Children's Choir began in 1997 and has grown to be one of the most distinguished youth choral programs in the region. This group focuses on singing a diverse selection of choral music, including pieces from a variety of languages and cultures. Singers in the program also learn performance skills, sight singing, ear training, and music theory.
