Vote to Support the 'Old Main Oath'

The Associated Student Government, in partnership with Resident's Interhall Congress, Student Alumni Board and Student Athlete Advisory Committee, propose the university's first campus creed, known as the "Old Main Oath." The Old Main Oath is an oath for all students, faculty and staff that captures the values, morals and spirit that we possess at the University of Arkansas. This was a platform initiative of the 2015-16 ASG executive officers intended to establish integrity, openness and general principles of civility by defining common values in our institution.

In the fall semester, a student-led committee was formed to draft an oath that encompasses what it means to be a Razorback. Members of this committee were ASG President Tanner Bone, ASG Graduate Student Congress Speaker Scout Johnson, ASG Director of Traditions Raygan Sylvester, ASG Senator Will Watkins, SAB Vice President of Sponsorship Blair Peterson, RIC President Russell Sharp, SAAC Representative Eric Janise, and ASG Vice-President, Morgan Farmer, who chaired the committee.

The ASG Senate and the Graduate Student Congress recommended the Old Main Oath for adoption, and students will have the opportunity to vote to formally adopt the Old Main Oath. Students can vote by logging on vote.uark.edu during the ASG general election, happening March 14-16. Download a full PDF version of the proposed creed.

"The Old Main Oath was written to truly encapsulate what it means it be a part of our campus community," said Morgan Farmer, vice president of ASG. "We began looking at the values of our campus and what makes us unique, we looked at a lot of other schools and their creeds or oaths, and then customized it to our campus. We hope that our students will embrace this new tradition and it will become a compass for current and future students."

The Associated Student Government at the University of Arkansas is a student-led organization that acts as an organized voice for all students and strives to effectively represent student interest. Questions about ASG can be directed to 479-575-5205, asg@uark.edu or asg.uark.edu.
