Pat Walker Health Center Brings Awareness to Eating Disorders

Did you know in the U.S., 20 million women and 10 million men will struggle with an eating disorder at some point in their life?

Eating disorders are not a phase, fad or lifestyle choice; they are serious, potentially life-threatening conditions that affect a person's emotional and physical health, which is why the Pat Walker Health Center will host an eating disorder awareness event from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 26 in the Arkansas Union Connections Lounge in conjunction with National Eating Disorder Awareness Week - Feb. 21-26.

Eating disorders can present in different ways, and affect both men and women. Many people suffering may not even appear "sick." The health center has a dedicated team of medical professionals to help support and treat students who may be affected by an eating disorder.

"Our team is focused on empowering students who struggle with disordered eating to seek care now and allow us to be a support system during their recovery process," says Dr. Stephanie Lowry, team director and Family Medicine physician. "The health center's awareness event will offer information, resources and giveaways, all while bringing awareness to eating disorders. We encourage everyone to stop by to learn more."

Eating disorders are real, complex and devastating conditions that can have serious consequences for health, productivity and relationships. The outpatient eating disorder team encourages anyone on campus who may have an eating disorder, or have concerns about a friend or colleague, to reach out to the health center for help by calling 479-575-4451. You may also stop by the event to learn more about the team and the resources available on campus.
