So, You've Caught the Flu, Now What?

Public health safety is important, which is why if you catch the flu, it's important to take precautionary measures to ensure you do not infect others. The Pat Walker Health Center strongly encourages you to take the following precautions if you have the flu:

  • Isolation: The best way to prevent from infecting others is to isolate yourself. If you live in a residence hall, we recommend contacting your RA.
  • Take your temperature: Make sure to monitor your body temperature. If you don't have a thermometer, you can get one at the health center or the front desk of most resident halls.
  • Attending classes: If you have a fever, you should not attend your classes. If you need to miss class, make sure to contact your professors/instructors ahead of time. For helpful information about missing class with an illness, check out our new resource.
  • Infection control measures: Cover your cough; dispose of tissues in the trash. Wash you hands frequently, especially after coughing and sneezing. Wear a mask if you must be around others. Do not eat or drink after others, and make sure to disinfect surfaces, especially those used by multiple people.
  • Treatment of symptoms: Get lots of rest and drink plenty of liquids. See the health center resource sheet on how to treat your flu.
  • Flu vaccines: Remember how bad you feel when you caught the flu, and plan to get a seasonal flu shot in the fall.

If you experience any flu symptoms, it's always a good idea to schedule an appointment with a health center primary care provider. Go to myhealth.uark.edu to schedule your appointment, or call 479-575-4451.
