Professor Earns Chemical Society Regional Award

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Charles Wilkins, Distinguished Professor of analytical chemistry in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry received the 2015 Southwest Region of the American Chemical Society Award. The $2000 award and plaque were presented during the Southeast and Southwest Regional meeting of the American Chemical Society Awards Luncheon Nov. 6 in Memphis, Tennessee.

The annual award is given to someone working in the region who has made significant contributions to the field of chemistry.  

Wilkins was a key contributor in the development of computer assisted data acquisition systems and the development of Fourier transform mass spectrometry as an important tool for chemical analysis. He served as chairman of the Analytical Division of the American Chemical Society from 1991-1992.

Wilkins has received a number of awards during his career, including:

  • American Chemical Society Division of Analytical Chemistry Award in Chemical Instrumentation
  • Fellow of the American Chemical Society
  • Elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science
  • American Chemical Society Franklin and Field Award for Outstanding Achievement in Mass Spectrometry
  • Pittsburgh Analytical Award
  • Lester W. Strock Award from the Society of Applied Spectroscopy
  • Chairman of the Computers in Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society
  • Tolman Medal from the Southern California Section of the American Chemical Society
  • Gold Medal from the New York Section of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy
