University Recreation to Host Indoor Cycle Customization Sessions

University Recreation will be hosting indoor cycle-customization sessions for any interested UREC members. Drop-in sessions will be held every first Thursday of the month in HPER 220 from 7-8:30 a.m. and 2-3:30 p.m.

The new bikes have the ability to be completely customized to each individual rider which allows for a more efficient workout. The computer console contains an "advanced mode" in which a participant can type in their gender, age, weight and estimated cardio activity. Based upon these demographics, the computer generates a predicted "functional threshold watt rate" number. This number indicates how long the individual can uphold a certain wattage for a consistent period of time.

"Cycling classes on the Coach by Color bikes allows you to challenge yourself in new ways," said Mavie Hogue, certified Coach by Color Instructor.

"Whether you are looking to build your basic fitness, or push yourself to new levels, these bikes help you get there more effectively. Come join in and find your favorite color zone."

Once the bike is set up for the individual, they are able to choose the "color on mode." This mode switches the console light on so that the rider can cycle more accurately with this visual aid. Instructors are then able to "coach by color" which allows the participants to get a more effective and fun workout.

"Once I got used to the settings, I found these new bikes much easier to program and insure that I did not slack on my workout," said Stephen Dittmore, associate professor for recreation and sports management and regular cycling participant.

"The color system makes it easier to keep up with the instructor's direction."

Event details: Free tests are offered by UREC certified cycling and certified coach by color instructors in HPER 220 from 7-8:30 a.m. and 2-3:30 p.m. every first Thursday of the month. Registration is not required for these drop in sessions.
