University Recreation will celebrate National Walking Month with their annual "Fitober" event that will begin Wednesday, Oct. 1, and end Friday, Oct. 31. Fitober is a special event where participants will log any daily activity that is done on foot. Participants may walk, jog, skip, or even hop miles the entire month of October to get fit, as well as, win prizes.

"Participating in Fitober the past two years has motivated me to reach for a goal," said Dorine Bower, UREC member and Fitober participant. "The tracking software UREC offers to log your mileage is always very helpful."

Participants who log 50 miles or more of any "on foot" activity on fitober.uark.edu will receive a pair of performance socks with the UREC logo.  "I appreciated the extra motivation to stay active through the month of October and the quality of the socks was an added bonus" said Jessica Lea Williams, Office of Admissions.

"The Surgeon General's recommendation for a healthy lifestyle is to accumulate 30 minutes of activity four to five days a week," said Casey Fant, fitness and wellness assistant director. "This event is always an excellent way for the community to gauge their current health status and daily activity."

Fitober encourages the university community to get active during, and stay active after, the month of October.

"This event is completely free and does not require a UREC membership, anyone can participate," said Fant. "We want to encourage and promote health to the entire community, and especially to those who wish to participate in Fitober."

"The changing of seasons and mild weather during October is a beautiful time get outside and be active," said Shaina Hayutin, university recreation graduate assistant for fitness and wellness. "It's a perfect time to refresh your personal fitness goals before the holidays."
