Research Camp Deadline Extended to Sept. 10

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The deadline to apply to a two-day research camp for faculty members who are starting their research programs has been extended.

The camp is sponsored by the offices of the vice provost for faculty development and enhancement and the vice provost for research and economic development. All tenure-track faculty in their first, second or third year who are interested in attending must apply by Sept. 10. The application form, which can be found here, requires a department head/chair endorsement. 

The camp will be held off-campus on Sept. 28-29. Transportation, housing and meals will be provided.

“The purpose of the camp, now in its second year, is to introduce faculty who are starting their research program to strategies and techniques that will make their research programs successful,” said Ro Di Brezzo, vice provost for faculty development and enhancement.

Jim Rankin, vice provost for research and economic development, said, “Our faculty are key to the university’s goal of being recognized as a top 50 public research university. A camp such as this is well worth the investment.”

Participants will be introduced to the University of Arkansas research development and research compliance policies, procedures and resources.

Approximately 30 faculty members will be selected based on the strength of their applications, their commitment to pursuing funding (by agreeing to submit a future proposal for external funding) and department chair/head recommendations.

The program will give participants an opportunity to learn about the research enterprise at the U of A. In addition, specific programs will be targeted to federal, state, industry, and foundation funding as well as publishing opportunities.

  • Industry funding
  • Managing time as a productive researcher
  • How to get the most from a mentor
  • Protecting intellectual property
  • Working with the Institutional Review Board and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
  • Bringing research into the classroom
  • Setting up a laboratory/purchasing equipment
  • Hiring post-doctoral research associations, graduate students and undergraduate students
  • Policies related to research
  • Impact of research on third-year review and promotion and tenure decisions
