Lunchtime Workplace Series Offers Five Tips for Managing Project Risk

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Managers involved in, or faced with, an impending project can use their lunch breaks on Tuesday, Aug. 11, to participate in a University of Arkansas Global Campus class that explores assessing, reducing and managing project risks.

Participants in the "5 Tips for Managing Project Risk" class can meet face-to-face from noon to 1 p.m. at the Global Campus in Rogers, 3300 Market St., or learn via online simulcast. The class will cover the tools and methodology used to successfully manage project risk.

Registration is available online. The cost is $29, but U of A faculty, staff and Alumni Association members receive a 10 percent discount.

This class is the first in the "Lunchtime Workplace 'Tips' Series" offered by the Global Campus. Future classes in this series include "Tricks to Build Data Selection Lists in Excel" on Sept. 8 and "5 Pivot Table Tricks and Tips" on Nov. 10.

"The key to managing risk is to get the project team engaged and empowered," said Rick Teague, class instructor and an adjunct instructor at the College of Engineering at the U of A. "We will explore the most effective way of monitoring a project to understand when contingency actions are necessary, and at what cost."

The content of this one-hour class is a "sneak peek" into the broader 15-hour Managing Projects Certificate course, also offered by the Global Campus, said Judith Tavano, director of professional development programs.

"We would like managers to take the certification certificate course, but if they can't, we know they will walk away from this lunchtime class with tips they are sure to find useful in mitigating project risk," Tavano said.

Class participants will be able to:

  • Identify potential internal and external risks
  • Create a contingency plan
  • Make sure every team member knows and understands the contingency plan
  • Learn when to say no

Participants can earn one hour of recertification credit from the Society for Human Resource Management and the Human Resource Certification Institute.

The full, 15-hour Managing Projects Certification course will run Tuesday evenings from Sept. 1 through 29 at the Global Campus in Rogers. The cost is $590, but U of A faculty, students, staff and Alumni Association members receive a 10 percent discount.

Participants who successfully complete the 15-hour course will earn a certificate of completion from the Global Campus, 11.75 professional development hours from the Society for Human Resource Management and 11.75 business hours from the Human Resource Certification Institute.
