All Faculty Dead Day Workshop on Friday, Dec.12

The guest speaker for this event will be Laurie McNeil. McNeil is the Bernard Gray Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. She is the recipient of the National Science Foundation funding for transforming the teaching of physics.

Her presentation is titled "It Can Happen Anywhere: Active Engagement in Large Classes Across Arts & Sciences.

Abstract
Whether you call it "active engagement," "student-centered learning," "flipped classroom" or some other term, you can get your students thinking, doing, and (more important!) learning more in a large lecture class no matter what subject you teach. In this workshop participants will explore a variety of pedagogical techniques that can be used in large lecture classes, with examples from a multiple disciplines in the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and fine arts. Participants will also look at reasons to adopt these techniques, including better learning outcomes and better retention, especially among underrepresented groups.
