Eleven Students Represent U of A at National Conference

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Eleven University of Arkansas students in environmental dynamics, geosciences and engineering presented results of their research projects at the 33rd Annual Technical Conference of the National Association of Black Geoscientists this fall in Pasco, Washington.

The U of A students were joined by 28 students from across the United States. The participation of all 39 students was funded by a National Science Foundation grant awarded to Steve Boss, professor of geosciences and director of the environmental dynamics and sustainability programs.

Home to one of the most active student chapters, University of Arkansas students have been attending the conference since 2006 and the university hosted the annual conference on the Fayetteville campus in 2009. The Department of Geosciences and the Environmental Dynamics doctoral program will host the conference again in September 2015.

The conference included two days of research presentations, professional development opportunities for students and presentations by U.S. Department of Energy scientists at the Hanford nuclear facility. The theme of the 2014 conference was “Environmental Innovation – Collaborations for the Future.”

Professional geoscientists from private industry, governmental agencies, educational institutions and students from across the country gather annually to meet, share ideas and foster mentorships that often lead to professional internships or full-time employment in the national geosciences workforce.
