New Course Gives Students Preview of Veterinary School Intensity
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Any student preparing to apply for veterinary school should consider adding the new Pre-Vet Academy course to their class schedule.
This three-credit, January 2015 intersession, course is designed to give students a veterinary school-like learning experience. Students will have the opportunity to gain insight into the volume and speed of material and skills that are taught in veterinary schools around the world. This class will be taught utilizing lectures, small group discussions and hands-on activities.
Students will also be exposed to professors and admissions personnel from three of the veterinary schools University of Arkansas graduates typically apply to, including:
- Dr. Tim Evans, University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, Toxicologist, Theriogenologist, and 2013 Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence recipient
- Dr. Matt Welborn, Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine, Farm Animal Clinician and Foreign Animal Disease Diagnostician
- Dr.Joseph Taboada, Louisiana State University, School of Veterinary Medicine, Small Animal Internal Medicine Specialist and Associate Dean of Student and Academic Affairs
- Dr. Katrina Meinkoth, Oklahoma State University, Center for Veterinary Health Sciences, Shelter Medicine and Surgery lecturer
- Dr. James Meinkoth, Oklahoma State University, Center for Veterinary Health Sciences Veterinary Pathologist
University of Arkansas veterinarians from the departments of Animal Science and Poultry Science will also participate in the course.
The class is offered by the Department of Animal Science and will meet every day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students may enroll in the course at the same time they enroll in spring courses by selecting the “January Intersession 2015” term. Pre-requisites for enrollment are: BIOL 1543 and 1541L, and CHEM 1123 and 1121L. A sample daily course schedule can be found at animalscience@uark.edu.
