This Week in the Visual and Performing Arts: Oct. 3-10

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences will host art exhibits, several concerts and film screenings, a guest artist and a play this week. Students, faculty, staff and guest are encouraged to attend these events in the visual and performing arts.

Temporarily Indefinite, an exhibition exploring multiple cannons of artistic interpretation, is on view Oct. 2-29 at sUgAR, the student art gallery, located at 1 East Square Plaza in Fayetteville. Gallery hours are 3:30-6:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.

Associate professor Cory Mixdorf will give a trombone recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, in the Fine Arts Center’s Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

The Northwest Arkansas Gridiron Show will be held at the Rogers Little Theater at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3 and 4. The annual spoof of local, state and national news events is written and performed by local journalists, including students, faculty and staff of the Lemke Department of Journalism. Admission is $25.

University Theatre presents Godspell, the first performance of the 2014-15 Mainstage Series. Performances are 8 p.m. Oct. 3-4 and 8-11 and at 2 p.m. Oct. 5 and 12. All performances are in the University Theatre. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and university faculty and staff and $5 for students. The performances on Oct. 8 and 9 are free to students with a valid University of Arkansas ID.

Four new documentary films produced by students in the Lemke Department of Journalism will be screened at 5:45 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, at the Fayetteville Public Library. Films include Stage Presence by Flannery Wasson and Hannah Merritt, Tapping the Ozarks by Daniel Henkel and Alyssa Becker, Courageous Journey by Scott Ramsey and Kisa Clark and Hidden Treasures by Gary Weidner and Richard Tiffany. The screenings will be followed by a question and answer period with the student filmmakers.

Also on Monday, the University of Arkansas Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony will give a concert at 7:30 p.m. at the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville. Admission is $1 for students with a valid University of Arkansas ID and $5 for the general public.

Nadi Cinema presents About Elly (dir. Asghar Farhadi, Iran 2009) 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, in Hembree Auditorium, room 107E in the Agriculture, Food and Life Sciences building. 

Also on Wednsday, The University of Arkansas Symphony Orchestra will give a concert at 7:30 p.m. at the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville. Admission is $1 for students with a valid University of Arkansas ID and $5 for the general public.

Guest artist Mary Stokrocki will present "Exploration in Virtual Worlds: New Digital Multi-Media Literacy Investigations for Art Education" at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, in Kimpel Hall room 102.

Also on Thursday, The University of Arkansas Concert Choir and Women’s Chorus will give their fall concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Jennifer Burkes will give a voice recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

A display of printmaking student work of assistant professor Sean Morrissey continues until Oct. 17 in the Fine Arts Center Gallery exhibition cases.

Stationary Realms, an exhibit by multiple artists, will remain on display through Friday, Oct. 24, in the Fine Arts Center Gallery. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Artwork from printmaking and ceramics classes will be on display in the hallway cases in the Fine Arts Center throughout October.

The Arkansas Experience in the First World War, an exhibition of artifacts including uniforms, helmets, weapons and photos, will remain on display through December in the Bogle Exhibit Hall on the 5th floor of Old Main.
