October is National Walking Month, and University Recreation will celebrate with their annual “Fitober” event that will begin Wednesday, Oct. 1, and end Friday, Oct. 31. Fitober is a special event where participants will log daily activity that is done on foot. Participants may walk, jog, skip, or even hop miles the entire month of October to get fit, as well as, win prizes.

“Participating in Fitober last year motivated me to have a goal,” said Dorine Bower, UREC member and Fitober participant. “The tracking software UREC offers to log your mileage is very helpful.”

Participants who log 50 miles or more of any “on foot” activity on fitober.uark.edu will receive prizes.

“The Surgeon General's recommendation for a healthy lifestyle is to accumulate 30 minutes of activity four to five days a week,” said Casey Fant, university recreation fitness and wellness assistant director. “This event will be an excellent way for the community to gauge their current health status and daily activity.”

Fitober encourages the university community to get active during, and stay active after, the month of October.

“This event is completely free and does not require a UREC membership, anyone can participate,” said Fant. “We want to encourage and promote health to the entire community, and especially to those who wish to participate in Fitober.”

“The changing of seasons during October makes for beautiful scenery to get outside and be active,” said Jade Dworkin, university recreation graduate assistant for fitness and wellness. “It’s a perfect time to refresh, rejuvenate, and restart your personal fitness goals.”
