Workshop Offers Tips for Applying for Nationally Competitive Scholarships
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Office of Nationally Competitive Awards will host “Breaking the Code: A Workshop on Marshall, Rhodes, Gates Cambridge, and Fulbright Scholarships” from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6 in Ozark Hall. These awards are open to seniors of any major.
The workshop will provide overviews of the application process for all four awards and will include discussions on the required statements of purpose for the Marshall, Rhodes, Gates Cambridge, and Fulbright Scholarships. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
Students interested in attending are asked to RSVP to awards@uark.edu by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 5. Students who have an interest in these awards but are unable to attend this meeting are asked to visit the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards webpage or contact Suzanne McCray at smccray@uark.edu or 479-575-7940.
The Rhodes Scholarship funds graduate study at Oxford University, while the Gates Cambridge Scholarship funds graduate study at Cambridge University. Marshall Scholarships fund graduate study at any institution in the United Kingdom. The Fulbright Scholarship offers either one year of research or one year of teaching English in one of over 140 participating countries around the world. University of Arkansas students have had excellent success with these prestigious awards.
Last year, Mike Norton earned a Marshall Scholarship, and both Norton and Rachael Pellegrino were named Rhodes Finalists. Mariel Williams, an anthropology major, received the Gates Cambridge in 2012. In addition, 5 U of A students were awarded Fulbright Scholarships; Anne Greeott and Vena Romero earned Fulbright Research Grants, while Courtney Hill, Karsten Powers, and Rachael Schaffner were awarded Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships.
