FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The offices of the vice provost for research and economic development and vice provost for faculty development and enhancement are sponsoring a two-day research camp for faculty members who are starting their research programs.

“This is the first time we have offered a faculty research camp at the University of Arkansas,” said Ro Di Brezzo, vice provost for faculty development. “The purpose of the camp is to introduce faculty who are starting their research program to strategies and techniques that will make their research programs successful.”

Jim Rankin, vice provost for research and economic development, said, “Our faculty are key to the university’s goal of being recognized as a top 50 public research university. A camp such as this — which we hope to begin offering each fall — is well worth the investment.”

Participants will be introduced to the University of Arkansas research development and research compliance policies, procedures and resources. All tenure-track faculty in their first, second or third year who are interested in attending must apply by Sept. 30. The camp will be held off-campus on Oct. 21-22. Transportation, housing and meals will be provided.

The application form, which can be found here, requires a department head/chair endorsement. Approximately 30 faculty members will be selected based on the strength of their applications, their commitment to pursuing funding (by agreeing to submit a future proposal for external funding) and department chair/head recommendations.

The program will give participants an opportunity to learn about the research enterprise at the U of A. In addition, specific programs will be targeted to federal, state, industry, and foundation funding as well as publishing opportunities.

• Finding research opportunities
• Grant writing
• Federal funding
• Industry funding
• Managing time as a productive researcher
• How to get the most from a mentor
• Protecting intellectual property
• Working with the Institutional Review Board and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
• Bringing research into the classroom
• Setting up a laboratory/purchasing equipment
• Hiring post-doctoral research associations, graduate students and undergraduate students
• Policies related to research
• Impact of research on third-year review and promotion and tenure decisions
