Bid Day to Be Broadcast Live From the Greek Theatre Sunday

Panhellenic Bid Day will take place at 10 a.m. this Sunday, Aug. 24, in the Chi Omega Greek Theatre.

“Bid Day is an exciting time for the Greek Community as thousands of U of A sorority members gather to extend bids to the new members to join their chapters,” said Lindsey Bach, panhellenic council president.

For the first time, Bid Day will be broadcast live by UATV and the production company Avad3 and simulcast into the Hillside Auditorium near the Greek Theatre.

“This is a great addition to Bid Day to provide our guests with a place to keep cool throughout the event, as well as enjoy the experience with family and friends in a safe and comfortable campus location,” said Parice S. Bowser, director of Greek Life.

The ceremony will be broadcast live via the on-campus cable Channel 22, on Cox Cable Channel 214 in the rest of Fayetteville and on the UATV website. The live broadcast provides new opportunities for people interested in Greek Life.

“Having a live broadcast of this event will allow family and friends, who are unable to attend, the opportunity to share this moment from afar,” said Ashley Bloxom, assistant director of Greek Life.

UATV is also excited about the opportunity to broadcast Bid Day.

“Producing a remote broadcast is a great experience for the students,” said Robyn Starling-Ledbetter, UATV advisor and journalism professor.  “It requires us to build a production team of students to run cameras and equipment.  It also creates a real ‘live’ broadcast experience for the students, which can’t be easily imitated.  The students will be working alongside the production company to help with the live streaming.”

Now, people from various parts of the country will be able to watch the celebration.

“The most important aspect of Bid Day is watching new members open their envelopes which reveals the chapter that has extended them a membership bid,” Bach said.  “Later, each chapter leads their new members back to the chapter house or other set locations to welcome them into sisterhood.”

During this process, University of Arkansas students can find comfort in the Greek Life community.

“On this day, potential new members will find their home away from home and the place where they belong,” said Sam Cusumano, vice president of recruitment. “It’s an indescribably unique day that you will only experience once in a lifetime.”

Free bottled water will be provided by Pepsi and Chartwells Dining Services.
